Malleshwaram- Breakfast Marathon!

While searching for 'Off beat things to do in Bengaluru' I had once read this idea of a breakfast marathon in Malleshwaram.

Now I must say something about Malleshwaram. It is not just one of the oldest areas in Bengaluru but there are so many things that only malleshwaram can offer. Even the street names are so melodious- Sampige road, Margosa road. Music to the ears!
It still has plenty of trees with IISc. just around the corner and the small streets offer so much for shopping specially during festival times that you feel like visiting the place just to absorb it's life essence.
Malleshwaram was the residing place of many famous people before- poets, scientists and players alike and for all the music lovers there is Chowdiah Memorial Hall quenching the thirst of art and culture.

Along with all other specialties, Malleshwaram has some of the oldest and best eateries. After reading that post about the breakfast marathon I felt it was an excellent idea. Now I need to tell you a little more about me. Calling yourself a foodie is one thing but having the ability to eat 10 items in one go is another. I'm both!

So the list was like this:
  1. Veena Store- Idli-Vade followed by something else (it's famous for kesaribath, kharabath and bise bele bath aka BBB as well)
  2. CTR- Benne Masale Dose (also famous for Mangalore bajji aka golibaje)
  3. New Krishna Bhavan- Neer Dose (also famous for Mangalore buns)
I stay in Marathalli and Malleshwaram is almost 18-19 kms away. This itself is enough to convince you that I'm a foodie! That I would travel so for only for breakfast! Anyways, coming back to the topic, the distance meant that I had to leave early or else be ready to wait for long as all the above mentioned eateries are quite famous and on a weekend there will be more people. So I left home at around 6.45 and met two of my friends on the way who were equally excited about the breakfast marathon!

We reached Veena Store may be around 7.30 and there already was a big queue. Sigh.. A friend stood in the queue and after some 10 min we had in our hands steaming idli and vada. One thing about this place is they serve chutney separately and there is a guy designated only for that, holding a ladle in hand! Food is served in areca nut plates which really is a good initiative. It is biodegradable and provides income to so many areca farmers as well.
Idli was good but Vada was the clincher. Chutney was just perfect. I did not eat anything else there and soon we headed towards our second destination.

Sri Sagar famously known as CTR is THE place for Benne Masale Dose. Though it has some other absolutely yummy and quite famous dishes we settled for just the dosa.

Our next stop was New Krishna Bhavan. Now this was relatively empty of the lot but sad news was Neer Dose was not available yet. Waiter came and asked us if we would like to have anything else but since we weren't really hungry by that time and we wanted to have Neer Dose only, we decided to wait.
After some 15 min came our Neer Dose- and a bit of disappointment served by the side. Alas! the taste was only mediocre. Nevertheless, coffee was quite good.

There ended our breakfast marathon in Malleshwaram. We could have included Halli Mane as well but by then we were full and ready to head back home for the second round of Sunday sleep!

There are some more places you can try the breakfast marathon- Basavanagudi. Give a try with Vidhyarthi Bhavan, Brahmin's Coffee Bar and South Thindies. I did that as well recently. And ofcourse, the early morning long drives towards Ramanagara for Kamath's breakfast buffet or towards Tumkur for Pavitra Tatte Idli are some more which must be in your to-do list.
