Spectacular Shankar Falls!
It was June and I hadn't yet started my Monsoon travels! After a scorching summer where at times days touched 40 degrees, Bengaluru was unbearable. It was still first week of June but literally every homestay we called up was booked for the weeked. After alot of research and calling up more than 15 places we finally got the accomodation at Hidden Valley. (More about the place and Devigudda in another blog)
Homestay guy suggested this small waterfalls called Shankar falls but said there is no guarantee about the quantity of water as the rains haven't picked up yet. We decided to give it a try neverthless and proceeded towards Aldur. After Aldur take the route that goes to Sringeri and travel for some 6 kms (after passing Bannur on the way) comes a small tea stall which is called Shankar falls tea stall.
There was only one other car parked and we felt good thinking early morning drive was a good idea! After talking with the shop owner for few minutes we proceeded toward the fall. This is located in a coffee plantation and the path leads through small streams.
We could hear the sound of the falls from far but it was not in sight. Finally after some 10 min of walk there it was. Not a big falls but a really beautiful one!
There was a family with a small baby enjoying the falls but it looked pretty clean and untouched. There was not alot of water but by the looks of it it did not seem like this will every get lot of water. We climbed up letting the family enjoy their time at the falls and sat at the top looking at water plunging below.
After some 10 min though we came down we couldn't muster enough courage to get in to the water as it was ice cold. We took some pictures and sat with our legs dangling in the cool water.
Come monsoon and at every nook and corner you will find a fall in the Malenadu region. With our minds refreshed, we saw the sun peeping out and the coffee back at the homestay was beckoning us! With a little reluctance (only a little because the hungry stomach had other ideas!) we headed back.
Don't forget to pay a visit to the Shankar falls the next time you're in the Sringeri-Chikmagalur road!
